## Sarah Tavel Shifts Gears at Benchmark, Focusing on the Future of AI
Sarah Tavel, who made history as Benchmark’s first female General Partner in 2017, is transitioning to a venture partner role after eight years with the firm. The announcement, made via X, signals a shift in focus for Tavel, allowing her to dedicate more time to exploring emerging technologies, particularly “AI tools at the edge” and the broader direction of artificial intelligence.
In her new capacity, Tavel will continue to actively invest and maintain her position on existing company boards. This ensures continuity for her portfolio companies while affording her the opportunity to delve deeper into the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
Tavel’s journey to Benchmark was marked by significant experience in both product management and venture capital. Before joining the prestigious VC firm, she spent a year and a half as a partner at Greylock and three years shaping products at Pinterest. Her experience in the investment world extends further back to Bessemer Venture Partners, where she played a key role in sourcing investments in now-household names like Pinterest and GitHub.
Benchmark, known for its deliberate approach to maintaining a small, tightly-knit team of six or fewer general partners since its inception in 1995, operates under a unique equal partnership structure. Unlike many VC firms where senior partners accrue a larger share of management fees and profits, Benchmark’s general partners equally divide all fees and returns, emphasizing a collaborative environment.
During her tenure as a General Partner at Benchmark, Tavel led investments in a diverse range of companies, including Hipcamp, the popular campsite marketplace, and Chainalysis, a cryptocurrency intelligence startup that famously assisted in cracking the Mt. Gox case. She also backed the beauty platform Supergreat, which was acquired by Whatnot in 2023. While not all investments achieved the desired outcome, such as the photo-sharing app Paparazzi which shuttered in 2023, Tavel’s investment in AI sales platform 11X, which recently faced scrutiny from TechCrunch, underscores her willingness to explore emerging, albeit sometimes controversial, technologies.
Tavel’s move to venture partner suggests a growing interest in the transformative potential of AI and a desire to contribute to its development in a more hands-on, research-oriented capacity. Her continued involvement with Benchmark ensures her expertise and experience remain valuable assets to the firm and its portfolio companies.
