## Starlink Slashes Hardware Costs to $0 with New 12-Month Subscription Plan

SpaceX is making its Starlink satellite internet service even more accessible with a new 12-month residential plan that drops the hardware costs to $0 in select markets. This means potential users can get the Starlink dish and router, normally priced at $349 in the US, without any upfront hardware fee.

This initiative aims to lower the barrier to entry for new subscribers, and it seems to be rolling out globally. While the offer is available in select markets in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, it is more widely available across most European countries. It’s worth noting that in Croatia, the plan applies specifically to the smaller and slower Starlink Mini kit.

While the $0 hardware price is enticing, there are some key details to be aware of. Customers have a 30-day trial period to test the service and return the kit for a full refund. However, after this period, canceling the service or changing the service address will incur a “change fee” equal to the cost of the hardware, prorated over the 12-month commitment. Furthermore, some areas with high Starlink usage may also be subject to a one-time “demand surcharge” of approximately $100.

Despite these caveats, for many users, the new plan could represent a significant saving. As an example, in the Netherlands, the standard Starlink kit typically costs €349 on top of a €50 monthly fee. This new plan eliminates the initial hardware cost, making Starlink more competitive.

SpaceX appears to be confident that the increased subscriber base from this lower initial investment will offset any potential losses from subsidized hardware. This move signifies a strategic push to expand Starlink’s reach and bring high-speed internet to more people, particularly in areas underserved by traditional broadband options. Whether it’s a good deal for you depends on your specific circumstances and location, so it’s essential to review the fine print and consider your long-term internet needs before committing.
