## Nvidia and Anthropic Clash Over AI Chip Export Controls

A rift has emerged between tech giants Nvidia and Anthropic over the U.S. government’s proposed export controls on AI chips. The dispute highlights the complex considerations and potential economic impacts of restricting access to advanced technology.

On Wednesday, Anthropic reiterated its backing for the U.S. Department of Commerce’s “Framework for Artificial Intelligence Diffusion,” a measure set to impose broad restrictions on AI chip exports starting May 15th. The following day, Nvidia responded sharply, voicing its disagreement with Anthropic’s stance.

“American firms should focus on innovation and rise to the challenge, rather than tell tall tales that large, heavy, and sensitive electronics are somehow smuggled in ‘baby bumps’ or ‘alongside live lobsters,’” an Nvidia spokesperson told CNBC, referencing Anthropic’s claims about how controlled chips are being smuggled into countries like China.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Nvidia added, “China, with half of the world’s AI researchers, has highly capable AI experts at every layer of the AI stack. America cannot manipulate regulators to capture victory in AI.”

Nvidia’s opposition stems from the potential impact on its global revenue. The company recently stated that the new licensing requirement for its H20 AI chips sold in China could cost it $5.5 billion in the first quarter of its 2026 fiscal year. These comments highlight the potential financial ramifications of export controls for companies heavily invested in international markets.

The opposing views of Nvidia and Anthropic exemplify the ongoing debate surrounding AI chip export restrictions. While some argue that controls are necessary to protect national security and technological advantage, others, like Nvidia, emphasize the importance of open markets and innovation to maintain competitiveness in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The outcome of this debate will significantly shape the future of the AI industry and the global tech economy.
