## Will Your iPhone Become Your Desktop? Rumors Swirl of a Potential Desktop Mode

The lines between phones and computers are blurring, and Apple might be considering taking that blur even further. While whispers of a visual overhaul for iOS and a more Mac-like iPadOS experience circulate, a fascinating new rumor suggests the iPhone could be getting a desktop mode of its own.

The initial spark comes from Majin Bu, an individual with a somewhat patchy track record for Apple leaks. According to Bu’s sources, future iPhones equipped with USB-C ports could offer a “Stage Manager like interface” when connected to an external display. This wouldn’t be a complete desktop replacement, but rather a feature enabling users to expand their screen real estate for tasks like presentations, video editing, or simply a more immersive viewing experience. Bu’s report also cautions that limitations might exist in terms of resolution or the number of simultaneously displayed apps.

Adding fuel to the fire, Jeff Benjamin from *9to5Mac* revealed in a recent video that he has personally witnessed Stage Manager in action on an iPhone, complete with “full-on external display support.” An accompanying article detailed that *9to5Mac* has even been able to test the feature within the iOS Xcode Simulator. While Benjamin expresses skepticism about Apple releasing this functionality to the public, the fact that it’s being actively tested suggests a genuine interest within Apple.

Currently, iPhones offer limited external display support via cables or AirPlay, typically restricted to screen mirroring or per-app functionality. A dedicated desktop mode would represent a significant leap forward, allowing for a more robust multitasking environment on a larger screen.

Apple wouldn’t be the first to explore this territory. Attempts to transform mobile devices into desktop substitutes, predating even Samsung’s DeX, have surfaced over the years. Whether Apple can succeed where others have struggled remains to be seen. However, the prospect of seamlessly transitioning from mobile to desktop productivity with just your iPhone is undeniably enticing. Only time will tell if this intriguing rumor becomes a reality.
