## Intel Joins the Return-to-Office Trend, Mandates Four Days On-Site

Intel is the latest tech giant to tighten its remote work policy, requiring employees to be in the office four days a week starting September 1st. The announcement, made by CEO Lip-Bu Tan during the company’s Q1 2025 earnings call on Thursday, signals a significant shift from the previous hybrid model, which allowed employees to work from home two days a week.

Tan cited “uneven” adherence to the current hybrid policy as a key driver for the change. He emphasized the importance of in-person collaboration for fostering a vibrant company culture, driving productive discussions, and accelerating decision-making. “I strongly believe that our sites need to be vibrant hubs of collaboration that reflect our culture in action,” Tan stated. “When we spend time together in person, it fosters more engaging and productive discussion and debate. It drives better and faster decision-making. And it strengthens our connection with colleagues.”

While the company-wide policy takes effect in September, Intel plans to allow local leadership to tailor the on-site experience. Tan mentioned that specific details would be shared at the site level, with employee input sought to optimize the in-office environment.

Intel’s decision comes at a time when the company is reportedly planning to reduce its workforce by as much as 20%. This move aligns Intel with other major tech players, like Amazon, Salesforce and Apple, who have also been implementing stricter return-to-office policies. Amazon, in particular, mandated a five-day in-office work week for its corporate employees last year.

The push to bring employees back to the office continues despite mixed evidence on its impact on productivity. While some believe in the benefits of in-person collaboration, research suggests that return-to-office mandates can negatively impact employee satisfaction, a factor that companies must consider carefully in today’s competitive talent landscape.
