## Grok Gets Smarter: xAI Adds Memory Feature to Compete with ChatGPT and Gemini
Elon Musk’s xAI is steadily enhancing its Grok chatbot, aiming to bring it on par with industry giants like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The latest update, announced Wednesday, introduces a “memory” feature, allowing Grok to retain details from previous conversations and provide more personalized responses.
This new capability means that Grok can now “learn” user preferences over time, leading to more relevant recommendations and advice. If you ask Grok for suggestions, the bot will remember your previous interactions and tailor its answers accordingly.
While this is a significant step forward for Grok, it’s worth noting that similar features have been available in competitor chatbots for quite some time. ChatGPT has long boasted a memory function, recently updated to incorporate a user’s entire chat history. Google’s Gemini also utilizes persistent memory to personalize its responses.
xAI emphasizes transparency with its new memory feature. According to a post from the official Grok account on X, users can “see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget.” This provides users with control over their data and how it’s used to personalize their interactions.
The memory feature is currently available in beta on Grok.com and the Grok iOS and Android apps. However, users in the EU and U.K. are excluded from the initial rollout. Users can disable the feature entirely through the Data Controls page in the settings menu. Individual “memories” can also be deleted via an icon within the Grok chat interface on the web, with Android functionality coming soon.
xAI has also announced plans to integrate the memory feature into the Grok experience on X. The addition of memory functionality is a clear indicator of xAI’s commitment to improving Grok and establishing its place as a major player in the competitive AI chatbot landscape.
