## Epic Games Takes Aim at Apple’s In-App Purchase Dominance with Zero-Fee Webshops

Epic Games is stepping up its efforts to woo developers away from Apple’s tightly controlled in-app purchase ecosystem. Fresh off a favorable court ruling, the company is rolling out significant changes to the Epic Games Store, offering developers a potentially far more lucrative alternative with zero percent revenue share on initial earnings and the introduction of store-hosted “webshops.”

The announcement comes on the heels of a court decision that prohibits Apple from preventing developers from informing users about alternative payment options outside of the App Store. This ruling paves the way for developers to steer users toward these alternatives, and Epic is poised to capitalize on this shift.

Starting in June, Epic Games will allow developers to keep 100% of their revenue on the first $1,000,000 earned per app per year through the Epic Games Store. After exceeding that threshold, Epic’s standard 88/12 revenue share will apply. While Apple and Google offer reduced commission rates for earnings below $1 million, their 15% rate pales in comparison to Epic’s zero percent.

Furthermore, Epic is launching a new feature in June: webshops hosted directly within the Epic Games Store. These webshops will allow developers to offer out-of-app purchases, providing a more cost-effective alternative to in-app purchases burdened by Apple and Google’s “exorbitant fees,” according to Epic.

To sweeten the deal for consumers, Epic will incentivize purchases made through these webshops by offering players 5% Epic Rewards on all such transactions. These accumulated rewards can then be used towards future purchases within the Epic Games Store.

The timing of these announcements is no coincidence. Following the recent court ruling, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney also revealed plans to bring *Fortnite* back to the US iOS App Store in the near future. The game was famously removed in 2020 after Epic implemented its own direct payment system, violating Apple’s App Store policies.

With these strategic moves, Epic Games is clearly positioning itself as a compelling alternative to Apple’s dominant in-app purchase system, offering developers greater financial control and potentially attracting more users to its platform. The introduction of zero-fee revenue sharing and webshops could significantly disrupt the mobile gaming landscape, providing a viable path for developers seeking greater independence and profitability.
