## Trump Reportedly Complained to Bezos Over Amazon’s Potential Tariff Display
Former President Donald Trump reportedly contacted Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to voice his displeasure after a report surfaced suggesting the online retail giant was considering displaying the cost of tariffs alongside product prices. The *Punchbowl News* report sparked immediate concern from the White House, with officials confirming to CNN that Trump reached out to Bezos “shortly after” learning of the potential move.
Adding fuel to the fire, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt publicly labeled Amazon’s rumored plan a “hostile and political act” during a press briefing. The controversy centered around a potential breakdown of tariffs, allowing consumers to directly see the impact of import duties on the final price of goods.
However, Amazon later clarified the situation. According to Amazon spokesperson Tim Doyle, the idea of displaying tariff breakdowns was only “considered” for items sold within Amazon Haul, a section of the website dedicated to ultra-cheap products shipped directly from manufacturers in China.
“The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products,” Doyle explained. He emphasized that the idea was “never approved and is not going to happen,” a statement Amazon has also published on its website.
The context for the disagreement lies in Trump’s implementation of sweeping tariffs, which impose fees of up to 145 percent on products imported from China. These tariffs have already had a ripple effect on retailers. Companies like Shein and Temu have been forced to raise prices, while some Amazon sellers with products manufactured in China are scrambling to manage the increased costs. Strategies range from depleting existing US-based inventory to even withdrawing from Prime Day promotions in an attempt to mitigate the financial impact of the tariffs.
