## Beyond Birdwatching: Bird Buddy’s Petal Camera and Wonder Blocks Expand into Nature Tech
Bird Buddy, the company known for its AI-powered smart bird feeders, is branching out with a new suite of products designed to monitor and enhance the entire backyard ecosystem. The Petal camera and Wonder Blocks, first unveiled at CES 2025, are now available for pre-order via a Kickstarter campaign, promising to bring a new level of insight into the world of plants, insects, and pollinators.
The Petal camera ($129), a 12-megapixel camera capable of recording 4K video, is designed to capture the beauty and intricacies of the natural world beyond birds. Equipped with a “proprietary AI model,” the camera can identify over 2,000 species of birds, bees, butterflies, insects, and native plants in real-time. It offers versatility with swappable lenses for wide-angle views or macro close-ups. For $249, the Duo Petal Pack provides two cameras and a mounting pole.
Power efficiency is a key feature. The Petal camera can operate autonomously for over a month on a single charge, thanks to its low-powered architecture. A solar panel is also included, offering the potential for near-indefinite battery life with sufficient sunlight. Users can access live footage or recorded videos through a dedicated mobile app. A unique “Nature’s Voice” feature even generates *BBC Earth*-style mini-documentaries with AI-generated narration, based on the identified flora and fauna.
Beyond capturing the environment, Bird Buddy is also offering ways to enhance it with the Wonder Blocks. This modular smart habitat system is designed to support pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, providing them with water, food, and shelter. The core of the system is the Habitat smart planter ($149), which serves as a base for various upgrades, including a bee habitat and a constantly flowing stream.
Larger Wonder Blocks sets are also available. The $299 set adds a Petal camera and an Observation Pole, while the $499 Hero set includes two cameras, an arched frame for magnetic accessories, and three attachments for feeding hummingbirds and sheltering butterflies.
The Wonder Blocks system will be managed through a dedicated Wonder App, separate from the Bird Buddy feeder app. However, Bird Buddy emphasizes that the Petal and Wonder Blocks are designed as part of a broader nature tech ecosystem, with plans to integrate the two product lines further in the future.
With delivery expected in mid-2026, Bird Buddy’s new offerings promise to expand the possibilities of nature observation and conservation, offering users a deeper understanding and connection with the world around them.
