## Anthropic Endorses US AI Chip Export Controls, Suggests Strategic Refinements
Anthropic, a leading AI company, has voiced its strong support for the U.S. government’s proposed export controls on domestically produced AI chips, aimed at maintaining America’s competitive edge against China in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. However, the company has also proposed a few strategic adjustments to the framework, detailed in a blog post released Wednesday.
The “Framework for Artificial Intelligence Diffusion,” spearheaded by the outgoing Biden administration in January and slated to take effect on May 15th, seeks to bolster national security and ensure U.S. dominance in AI by restricting the export of advanced AI chips. The framework categorizes countries into three tiers, each subject to varying degrees of export limitations. Tier 3, encompassing nations already facing export controls like Russia and China, would see further restrictions. Tier 2 countries, including Mexico and Portugal, would face new restrictions and quotas on chip purchases. Tier 1 nations, such as Japan and South Korea, would remain unaffected.
While semiconductor giant Nvidia previously criticized the proposed restrictions as “unprecedented and misguided,” suggesting they would “derail” global innovation, Anthropic takes a different stance. In its recent blog post, Anthropic expressed broad support for the initiative.
Specifically, Anthropic suggests a refined approach to Tier 2 countries. Instead of a fixed cap on chip purchases, the company proposes *lowering* the initially proposed quantity of unrestricted chips. Concurrently, Anthropic advocates for encouraging these nations to procure chips through government-to-government agreements. This, they argue, would mitigate the risk of smuggling and enhance U.S. oversight over the distribution and use of these critical components.
Furthermore, Anthropic emphasizes the need for increased government funding to ensure the effective enforcement of these export controls.
Anthropic’s stance aligns with its CEO, Dario Amodei, a prominent voice advocating for stronger AI chip export regulations. In a January op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, Amodei articulated the critical importance of such controls in maintaining America’s AI leadership.
TechCrunch has reached out to Anthropic for further clarification and insights into their proposed refinements. The coming weeks will be crucial as the U.S. government evaluates feedback from industry leaders like Anthropic and finalizes the implementation of these crucial AI chip export controls.
