According to Adam Fry, OpenAI’s ChatGPT search product lead, users can now expect to see product cards with images, prices, and star ratings displayed in an easy-to-read format. This is a significant improvement over previous iterations, which lacked up-to-date pricing information and visual representations of products.

In a recent demo, Fry showcased how a specific query like “best espresso machines under $200 that are great for making lattes and nice for small counter space” generates a curated list of top picks, complete with product cards and detailed descriptions. Clicking on a product card opens a Google Shopping-like sidebar featuring purchase options and user reviews aggregated from sources like Amazon, Best Buy, and Reddit. Users can even click a button labeled “Ask about this” to directly query ChatGPT about specific product features.

OpenAI emphasizes that these recommendations are organic and unbiased; there are no sponsored results or advertisements influencing the listings. To ensure accurate pricing, OpenAI partners with unnamed entities to maintain up-to-date information.

While the updated shopping feature shows great promise, it’s not without its limitations. During a test with the unreleased Nintendo Switch 2, ChatGPT provided inaccurate information regarding retailers and pre-order availability, highlighting the need for users to double-check the AI’s recommendations, as with any generative AI tool.

These shopping updates are now rolling out to all ChatGPT users, including those on Plus, Pro, Free, and even logged-out accounts. This widespread availability underscores OpenAI’s commitment to improving user experience and accessibility.

OpenAI first integrated a search engine into ChatGPT in October of last year. Since then, the company reports a staggering 1 billion web searches performed within ChatGPT in the past week alone, indicating its growing utility.

In addition to the shopping enhancements, OpenAI is also expanding accessibility by enabling users to interact with ChatGPT via WhatsApp through the 1-800-CHATGPT number. The company also announced improvements to search citations, trending searches, and autocomplete functionalities, further enriching the overall user experience.

These updates demonstrate OpenAI’s ongoing commitment to refining ChatGPT and making it a more valuable tool for everyday tasks, including shopping and information discovery. As the technology evolves, users can expect even more sophisticated and personalized experiences in the future.
