## Worldcoin Arrives Stateside: Sam Altman’s Crypto Venture Launches with Eye-Scanning Orbs
Sam Altman, the name synonymous with OpenAI and the AI revolution, is making waves in the cryptocurrency world with Worldcoin. On April 30th, a buzzworthy event in San Francisco marked the official US launch of Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project that aims to verify human identity through iris scanning.
The launch party, held in a warehouse-like complex, boasted all the hallmarks of a Silicon Valley affair: champagne, a live performance by Anderson Paak, and the star of the show – a collection of futuristic, eye-scanning orbs.
The concept behind Worldcoin is ambitious, even bordering on science fiction. Users are invited to have their irises scanned by these orbs. This process, according to Altman and co-founder Alex Blania, verifies their “humanness” in an increasingly AI-dominated world. In exchange for this scan, users are rewarded with 16 WLD, the Worldcoin cryptocurrency.
While the idea might seem far-fetched, Altman’s involvement has drawn significant attention to the project. Worldcoin is opening stores in six US cities – Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco – where users can get their irises scanned. The company also teased a smaller, more portable iris-scanning device called the Orb Mini.
According to Worldcoin, their orbs have already verified 12 million individuals from over 100 countries on its Ethereum-based World Chain. The project aims to create a globally accessible and fair digital currency, relying on this unique biometric verification method.
The concept is intriguing, raising questions about privacy, security, and the very definition of identity in the digital age. Whether it succeeds in its grand vision remains to be seen, but Worldcoin, with its eye-scanning orbs and ambitious goals, is undoubtedly a project to watch in the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrency.
