## MoviePass Bets on Blockchain: Introducing Mogul, a Fantasy Sports Platform for Film Fans

MoviePass, the once-revolutionary movie subscription service, is taking a surprising leap into the world of blockchain and fantasy sports with its new platform, Mogul. Announced in partnership with Mysten Labs, Mogul aims to capitalize on cinephiles’ passion for tracking films and debating box office success, transforming moviegoing into a competitive, prediction-based game.

Built on Mysten’s Sui blockchain, Mogul allows users to participate in fantasy-style tournaments and challenges centered around forecasting critical ratings, awards, and box office performance. Participants can compete against each other, earning digital collectibles (NFTs) and in-game currency while climbing the leaderboard. According to MoviePass CEO Stacy Spikes, Mogul is “the culmination of our long-term Web3 strategy,” designed to engage a new generation of film fans. Mysten Labs CEO Evan Cheng echoes this sentiment, stating that Mogul aims to “unlock a new category of onchain consumer experiences” and push the boundaries of fan engagement.

Currently, MoviePass reports a waitlist of over 400,000 users eager to access the early beta version of Mogul. Beta participants will receive digital wallets to manage the platform’s virtual currency. The company envisions deeper integration of Mogul into the MoviePass app, blending ticketing, fandom, and speculation into a unified entertainment experience.

This move comes after a tumultuous period for MoviePass. Originally launched in 2011, the service offered unlimited movie tickets for a monthly fee of $10. However, the unsustainable business model led to bankruptcy following its acquisition by Helios and Matheson. Attempts to throttle user access without their knowledge by then-CEO Mitch Lowe and Helios and Matheson CEO Ted Farnsworth resulted in an FTC investigation, ultimately leading to guilty pleas from both Lowe and Farnsworth for defrauding investors.

While the current leadership of MoviePass emphasizes transparency, the shift towards NFTs and speculative gameplay raises questions. Is this a genuine effort to revitalize the brand and engage a new audience, or a desperate attempt to capitalize on emerging trends? Only time will tell if Mogul can successfully blend the love of movies with the thrill of competition, or if it will become another chapter in MoviePass’s roller-coaster history.
