## Google’s AI Mode Opens Up, Gains Enhanced Shopping and Planning Features

Google is significantly expanding access to its AI Mode, the experimental search feature that allows users to engage in complex, multi-part queries and follow-up questions. This move aims to challenge competitors like Perplexity AI and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search by offering a more robust and integrated AI-powered search experience.

Launched in March, AI Mode is now available to all users in the U.S. aged 18 and over who are enrolled in Google’s experimental “Labs” program. Furthermore, Google is testing an AI Mode tab directly within the standard Google Search interface for a small percentage of U.S. users, hinting at a wider rollout in the future. This marks a significant step towards mainstreaming the feature and integrating it directly into the user’s daily search routine.

Beyond increased accessibility, Google is also adding substantial new functionality, focusing on helping users find local businesses and products more effectively. AI Mode now presents visual place and product cards that users can tap to reveal a wealth of information. For restaurants and salons, users can view ratings, reviews, and opening hours. For products, details include real-time pricing, promotions, images, shipping information, and even local inventory.

This enhanced functionality allows users to go beyond simple information gathering and use AI Mode for practical tasks. For instance, searching for “the best vintage shops with mid-century modern furniture” will return a curated list of nearby stores with real-time details like how busy they are, along with options to quickly call or get directions.

Planning a trip? Users can ask complex questions like, “best foldable camping chair that would fit in a backpack for under $100,” and AI Mode will provide a breakdown of recommended products with detailed information and links to retailers.

Google is also addressing the needs of users engaged in longer, more complex research projects. A new left-side panel on the desktop version of AI Mode allows users to easily revisit past searches, review previously presented information, and ask follow-up questions, ensuring a seamless and continuous research experience.

By expanding access and adding practical, user-centric features, Google is signaling its commitment to AI-powered search and directly competing with emerging players in the conversational AI space. The updates promise a more engaging, informative, and ultimately more useful search experience for users across a wider range of needs.
