## Amazon Unveils Nova Premier: A Multimodal AI Powerhouse for the Bedrock Platform
Amazon has officially launched Nova Premier, the latest and most powerful addition to its Nova family of AI models. Released on Wednesday, Nova Premier is designed to tackle complex tasks demanding a nuanced understanding of context, multi-step planning, and seamless execution across diverse tools and data sources. This multimodal model, available now on Amazon Bedrock, can process text, images, and videos, expanding the capabilities of the company’s AI development platform.
Announced initially in December 2024 at AWS re:Invent, the Nova lineup has steadily grown to include models specializing in image and video generation, audio understanding (Nova Sonic), and even AI agents capable of web browsing and task execution (Nova Act). Nova Premier stands out with its expansive context window of 1 million tokens, enabling it to analyze approximately 750,000 words in a single pass.
While Amazon touts Premier’s prowess, the model falls short of competitors like Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro on specific benchmarks. In coding tests like SWE-Bench Verified, Premier lags behind. Similarly, it underperforms on benchmarks that measure mathematical and scientific knowledge, such as GPQA Diamond and AIME 2025.
However, Nova Premier shines in other areas. Amazon’s internal benchmarking indicates strong performance in knowledge retrieval and visual understanding, particularly on tests like SimpleQA and MMMU.
In terms of pricing on Bedrock, Premier aligns with the competitive landscape. Users can expect to pay $2.50 per 1 million input tokens and $12.50 per 1 million generated tokens. This places it in a similar price bracket as Gemini 2.5 Pro, which costs $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
One key difference between Nova Premier and some leading models is its lack of “reasoning” capabilities. Unlike models such as OpenAI’s o4-mini or DeepSeek’s R1, Premier doesn’t employ extended processing time to meticulously consider and verify its responses.
Despite these limitations, Amazon is positioning Premier as an ideal tool for “teaching” smaller, more specialized models through a process called distillation. This allows companies to transfer Premier’s broad capabilities into tailored, efficient packages for specific use cases.
Amazon is clearly betting big on AI as a central driver of growth. CEO Andy Jassy recently revealed that the company is actively building over 1,000 generative AI applications and that its AI revenue is experiencing “triple-digit” year-over-year growth, representing a “multi-billion-dollar annual revenue run rate.” With the launch of Nova Premier, Amazon is solidifying its commitment to providing cutting-edge AI solutions through Bedrock and beyond.
