## Rivian Builds Battery Fortress Against Tariff Threats

Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, strategically amassed a significant stockpile of batteries for its vehicles, including trucks, SUVs, and commercial vans, according to a Bloomberg News report. This preemptive move was reportedly designed to mitigate the potential impact of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

The report indicates that Rivian proactively sourced lithium iron phosphate batteries from the Chinese firm Gotion prior to the election. These batteries were intended for use in Rivian’s delivery vans, a substantial portion of which are destined for Amazon.

Further bolstering its battery reserves, Rivian also collaborated with Samsung SDI, a South Korean company, to transport a substantial inventory of batteries to the United States, although the exact timing remains unclear.

This strategic stockpiling positions Rivian to better withstand the pricing pressures resulting from Trump’s auto tariffs. These tariffs apply to imported components used in vehicle manufacturing within the U.S. While Trump’s revised tariff plan offers some relief compared to the initially proposed across-the-board 25% tax on imported parts, experts still anticipate that it will likely lead to increased prices for new cars. By securing a buffer of tariff-free batteries, Rivian aims to cushion itself from these potential price hikes, potentially giving it a competitive edge in the increasingly crowded EV market.
