## Pinterest Declares War on “AI Slop” with New Content Labeling and Filtering Tools
Faced with a growing user revolt, Pinterest is finally taking action against the flood of low-quality, AI-generated content – affectionately dubbed “AI slop” – that has been infiltrating the platform. The image-sharing site announced Wednesday it will introduce new tools to identify and manage AI-generated and AI-modified images, answering the increasing chorus of complaints from its user base.
The core of the update focuses on transparency and user control. When users click on a Pin, an “AI modified” label will appear in the bottom left corner for images identified as AI-generated or altered. Pinterest plans to use a combination of metadata analysis and proprietary classifiers to detect AI content, even those lacking obvious markers. Recognizing that mistakes can happen, creators will also have the opportunity to appeal mislabeled content.
Beyond labeling, Pinterest is also giving users more power to curate their experience. An upcoming feature will allow users to select a “see fewer” option on AI Pins in specific categories prone to AI overruns, such as beauty and art. By selecting this option from the three-dot menu on a Pin, users will signal to Pinterest’s recommendation algorithms to prioritize human-created content. While initially limited to specific categories, Pinterest intends to expand this feature across the platform over time. The exact launch date of this “see fewer” feature remains unannounced, but the company promises it will arrive “soon.”
The move highlights the growing challenge that generative AI poses to platforms built on user-generated content. The ease with which AI can create realistic, yet often generic, images has opened the floodgates for low-quality content, potentially drowning out original, human-created content and diminishing the user experience. This influx has led to vocal protests from Pinterest users, who have reported the site becoming overrun with AI-generated images across browsing, searching, and board suggestions. Some have even gone so far as to declare the site “dead” due to the AI takeover.
For Pinterest, a platform built on inspiration and discovery within diverse fields like fashion, home décor, and DIY projects, the stakes are particularly high. The deluge of AI content threatens the very core of its value proposition.
“As people encounter AI-generated content on Pinterest, we are empowering our users to make more informed choices about the content they see,” said Pinterest CTO Matt Madrigal in a statement. “Gen AI content on Pinterest should enhance users’ ability to discover and act on their inspiration, and we are intentionally approaching this new landscape in a thoughtful way that benefits everyone on Pinterest.”
Pinterest has indicated that it plans to introduce more tools in the months ahead to further refine its approach to AI content management. Whether these efforts will be enough to stem the tide of “AI slop” and restore user confidence remains to be seen, but the new labeling and filtering features represent a significant first step in addressing the growing problem.
